tooth implant

When patients talk about a tooth implant, they usually mean everything needed to replace a missing tooth. In fact, there are three separate dental components. The first is a dental implant that goes into the bone and supports everything on top of it. Secondly, a precision implant post goes into the implant and sticks out into the mouth. Thirdly, a dental implant crown attaches to the post. The crown looks and feels much like a regular tooth in the mouth.

One of the most popular tooth implant designs used is the single tooth implant. Several of them can be placed in a row to restore a whole area of missing teeth. This helps chewing tremendously and allows patients to eat what they want. This design is considered better than a dental implant bridge. because there are more implants to support the dental work. Although it is difficult to replace a missing tooth in the smile, careful planning can often result in a natural looking restoration. The main obstacle is when a patient does not have adequate bone, however, bone grafting is always an option.

Even though a tooth implant is artificial, it must be carefully cleaned every day to avoid dental infections in the surrounding gums or in the supporting bone. Many patients who previously wore dentures and did not visit the dentist regularly, have to re-learn proper dental hygiene and start visiting the dental hygienist every six months for a routine cleaning. This often comes as a shock to some patients. Because of this, it is very important for patients to regularly visit their dentist after their tooth implant procedure.

There are lots of good reasons to have a tooth implant. The replacement crown helps keep the original natural design of the teeth and prevents moving and shifting of the teeth. It avoids the need to cut down natural and healthy teeth to construct a dental bridge.
