tooth pain after filling

Tooth pain after filling can been placed can be quite annoying considering that you may have had the dental filling in order to relieve the pain caused by a cavity. Cavities, also known as dental caries, are basically a form of tooth decay. This is most often caused by improper oral hygiene, allowing harmful bacteria in the mouth to build up in the form of plaque. This is a sticky film that sticks to your teeth, releasing acids directly onto the teeth. This can also create pockets of infection in your gums, causing gum disease, which, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

There is rarely tooth pain after filling. One possible cause of this discomfort is the filling material itself. White fillings are made of a composite material that has to be cured with a special light. The shrinkage of this material can cause some discomfort. This can be particularly bad if the composite is under-cured. Proper preparation and care when curing can make this pain completely avoidable.

It is not uncommon for a tooth to be sensitive after a filling but real tooth pain after filling is uncommon and needs to be examined. One problem could be that not all of the decay was properly cleaned out to repair the tooth. It could also mean that the decay went further in and root canal therapy will be needed. If there is discomfort when you are biting it may mean that the filling will need to be reshaped.
