Tooth Stains

tooth stains

Tooth stains can ruin an otherwise beautiful smile. What is unfortunate is that so many things in this day and age can stain the teeth. Coffee is notorious for staining teeth and more people than ever are consuming coffee in ever greater quantities. But coffee is not the only thing that can stain and the sheer number of things that can stain teeth make it difficult to avoid stained teeth. Even age can cause a yellowing of teeth and there is nothing you can do about growing older.

There are many things that can cause tooth stains and many of these things can also cause bad breath. Coffee, tobacco products, tea, soft drinks and red wine can all stain the teeth. Medications can also stain teeth. Tetracycline tooth staining can cause significant staining and can be very difficult to remove. Fluorosis is a condition where teeth get chalky white stains that do not match the rest of the tooth. Many staining problems can be easily remedied whereas others can be difficult to remove even with professional tooth whitening systems.

There are a number of ways of removing tooth stains. Whitening toothpaste, white strips, whitening floss, home tooth whitening kits and professional office tooth whitening systems can all hep whiten teeth, but as you can imagine there are varying levels of effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes are generally best for maintaining a white smile and removing light stains. Professional systems like Zoom 2 can dramatically change a smile in less than an hour. Professional home tooth whitening takes several nights but is one of the best ways of removing serious stains.
