Tooth surgery procedures have many different purposes and there are many different types. Of course, there's wisdom tooth surgery to remove a badly positioned wisdom tooth. This procedure varies from very simple to very complex. More difficult wisdom tooth extractions involve sectioning the tooth and the surrounding bone to access and remove the wisdom tooth. A simple tooth extraction is fairly simple and most of the time, easy.
Crown lengthening is another type of tooth surgery used to expose more healthy tooth structure. In most cases, crown lengthening is used to prepare a previously fractured tooth for a crown but more and more, it's used to lengthen and veneer short teeth in an unattractive smile. This procedure can be combined with cosmetic gum surgery to resculpt the gums tissues that frame the teeth in the smile. A tooth root amputation removes one bad root and spares the remaining healthy ones whereas a hemisection separates two roots that were previously part of one tooth.
Another tooth surgery is the removal of the dental pulp during a root canal procedure. In this procedure the patient is thoroughly numbed and an access is drilled through the top of the tooth and the hollow area within the natural dental crown is opened and deroofed. Specially designed root canal files are then used to remove the contents of each root canal. After shaping and flaring the canals, a rubber material called gutta percha is used to seal the entire length of each canal. A root canal tooth almost always requires a dental crown to strengthen it.
