Tooth Veneers

tooth veneers

Tooth veneers can be made out of several different types of materials and in several different ways. The original method was layering white dental filling material directly over a tooth. This was done in the dentist's chair and over a couple of hours. However, the dental filling material applied in this way stained and chipped over time.

As tooth veneers became popular the indirect technique was developed. It involved taking an impression of a patient's teeth and constructing an exact stone model of the patient teeth. A dentist or dental technician could then spend a great deal more time shaping and refining the restorations. The result was that they looked better and took less chair time to be placed during the patient's visit.

The ultimate in tooth veneers are porcelain veneers. This technique was similar to the earlier indirect composite method but instead used porcelain as the material of choice. Unlike composite laminates and direct dental bonding, the natural looking porcelain material does not stain or discolor. They are designed to fit a patient's face, smile and personality and when made correctly, they are very strong with natural looking surface texture.
