Tooth Whitener

tooth whitener

information from the  Atlanta Dental Group PC

The most popular form of tooth whitener is in gel form and contains carbamine peroxide. Peroxide dissolves organic matter but is very unstable. Carbamine peroxide is a modified peroxide that lasts longer and is more stable. The gels come in several different strengths but almost all have this same active ingredient.

A good tooth whitener should be liquid enough to absorb into a tooth through the microscopic pores between the tooth enamel crystals. All enamel crystals are made out of the same mineral, hydroxyapatite, and these crystals always have the same beautiful white color no matter who you are. It's the organic matter stuck between the crystals that gives the darkened color to teeth.

The best tooth whitener utilizes a tray system to allow several hours of enamel contact. The gel literally soaks into the enamel and does it work. This is the problem with many of the quickie methods and strips, they can't get all the way through the enamel in the short time they contact the tooth.
