The primary problem that results from bleaching is tooth whitening sensitivity. If this happens the teeth are desensitized for 2 weeks using a prescription fluoride. The bleaching procedure is resumed. Bleaching is a relatively safe procedure that usually results in a dazzling white smile. Many patients want to have it done but are too embarrassed to ask or feel that they are being vain. However, a white beautiful smile benefits everyone. Your beautiful white smile will please many people and perhaps help make you feel more comfortable in situations and places that you might have previously been concerned.
If the tooth whitening sensitivity returns, pateints are encouraged to use a 4 hour per day schedule instead of sleeping with the bleaching trays overnight. Bleaching is nor permanent. Your teeth can naturally stain again especially if you drink coffee (coffee smile). However, the method used at the Atlanta Dental Group PC allows you to later again whiten the color of teeth. The trays can be used again with fresh gel if you wish to freshen up your teeth.
Many times tooth whitening sensitivity occurs at the end of three or four days of nightime treatment. In this case, we ask patients to stop the nightime bleaching for six weeks and to then repeat the bleaching procedure again for a week. The two treatments often obtain a better result than the one week method and this avoids the tooth irritation that can occur with one week of continuous tooth whitening.
