A wisdom tooth headache is a common problem. Partially erupted wisdom teeth often have gum pouches over their tooth crowns and this excess gum tissue can get infected and cause pain. The gums swell and the opposing tooth often bites into the swollen gums. In an attempt to avoid biting into the gums, patients keep their mouths open or shift away from their normal bites.
A bad bite created by avoiding a wisdom tooth forces one or both of the jaw joints into the wrong position which causes discomfort in the jaw joint structures. The jaw joints become inflamed and tender. This wrong bite forces them to push into the ears when the patient closes into her teeth. The jaw muscles try to correct the problem but they soon go into spasm and hurt. This creates a wisdom tooth headache.
In some cases, a wisdom tooth infection can create pus which travels into the jaw muscles. This irritates the muscles, prevents the patient's mouth from opening and can cause a wisdom tooth headache. This is a serious problem and requires the immediate attention of a dentist. Infections of this kind can travel to the brain and cause long term problems or even death.
