Wisdom tooth pain is common. Most people do not have enough room for a wisdom tooth and this limited space in the back of the mouth causes many wisdom teeth to flip around into unusual positions. Because of the very high incidence of wisdom tooth problems, it is usually a very good idea to have this tooth removed early in life. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
A partially impacted wisdom tooth often has a gum pouch over it and it can get infected and cause discomfort. A poorly positioned wisdom tooth can improperly press against the second molar in front of it and trap food. This food trapping causes tooth decay and wisdom tooth infection. In some cases, the wisdom tooth or second molar dies and the patient gets a toothache which feels like wisdom tooth pain.
It is not uncommon for the front of a wisdom tooth to decay and cause wisdom tooth pain especially with hot and cold foods. Because of space problems, many wisdom teeth are twisted and turned into very unusual positions. The positioning problems prevent these teeth from being cleaned naturally and they often develop cavities and dental pain. Most wisdom teeth are so far back in the mouth that they can't be cleaned. When a patient opens the cheeks press tightly against all four wisdom teeth and the tight cheek prevents a toothbrush from cleaning the teeth.
