Wisdom tooth problems are common and should be taken care of as early as possible. Our ancient ancestors ate raw and unprocessed foods which gave them a good work out when eating. Chewing on hard foods caused their mouths to enlarge and easily accommodate every wisdom tooth. Modern man just doesn't eat many things that are hard to chew.
One of the most common wisdom tooth problems is pericornitis. It's due to a lack of space for the tooth to come in. The gums tissues above and around the tooth form a kind of kangaroo pouch that can easily trap food. The food then decays and causes a gum infection with wisdom tooth swelling and wisdom tooth pain. This can also cause soreness and bad breath. Wisdom tooth infection is probably one of the most serious difficulties. Today there are antibiotic resistant bacteria that can rapidly grow and cause serious dental infections with facial swelling.
Among the most aggravating wisdom tooth problems is the crowding of the lower anterior teeth due to the pressure placed on the teeth from the erupting wisdom teeth. Most orthodontists insist that the third molars be removed either during or after orthodontic treatment to help insure that the teeth stay in place after treatment. It makes good sense and protects an often expensive orthodontic investment.
There is no good reason not to have a wisdom tooth removal whenever there is a potential dental problem. Dr. Padolsky performs most of the wisdom tooth surgery for the Atlanta Dental Group PC including routine dental extraction and wisdom tooth extraction procedures. Most oral surgery procedures go very well, take less than an hour and are done in our office. Our dental practice will see dental emergency patients.
