Wisdom tooth removal surgery is necessary because a patient doesn't have enough room for this tooth. Of the thirty two teeth, the wisdom tooth is the last to erupt in the mouth. By the time it comes in, most of the room is taken and the tooth doesn't fit. Because of the limited space, this third molar can grow sideways or become trapped under the gums. When a wisdom tooth partially erupts, it forms a pouch that traps food. The trapped food can cause tooth decay and the tooth in front can also become decayed. If the gums are infected, it causes swelling, dental pain, and a bad odor.
It is very important to have wisdom tooth removal surgery, if there is wisdom tooth swelling and/or wisdom tooth infection. If the dental infection is untreated it can continue to grow and result in facial swelling that would prevent the mouth from opening.
The pressure from a wisdom tooth trying to get into the mouth can cause the rest of the teeth to move out of place. This is why an orthodontic patient usually has a wisdom tooth removal surgery after getting braces off. Early removal may even avoid the need for orthodontic care. When a wisdom tooth is trapped inside the jaw bone, a cyst can form around the tooth. Dental cysts can grow and push teeth out of their way. In some rare cases, a wisdom tooth cyst can form a tumor. This is a good reason for having this surgery performed early in life.
A wisdom tooth is also called a third molar and a dentist may refer to wisdom tooth removal as third molar surgery. Problems can develop without a patient having any pain.
