wisdom tooth surgery

Wisdom tooth surgery is often required to remove a wisdom tooth that is blocked out of the mouth. This tooth is often badly aligned, difficult to clean and serves as the source of many other dental problems including tooth decay adjacent teeth and periodontal swelling around the third molar. In fact, most dental emergencies involve problems with third molars. Pericornitis is a wisdom tooth complication that causes wisdom tooth swelling and is very common in young adults.

Wisdom tooth surgery varies in difficulty depending on how the tooth is oriented. It is significantly more difficult to remove a tooth lying horizontally inside the jaw bone. The bone covering the tooth must be removed in order to gain access to the tooth. In many cases, the exposed tooth has to then be sectioned into pieces in order to be able to remove these pieces. In some cases, only the gums tissues need to be removed for a full exposure of the tooth during a wisdom tooth removal procedure.

Wisdom tooth surgery can possibly prevent the wisdom tooth from crowding the teeth in front. The pressure from a wisdom tooth trying to get into the mouth can cause the rest of the teeth to move out of place. This is why most orthodontic patients usually have them removed after getting their braces off. Early removal may even avoid the need for orthodontic care. When a wisdom tooth is trapped inside the jaw bone, a cyst can form around the tooth. Dental cysts can grow and push teeth out of their way. In some rare cases, a wisdom tooth cyst can form a tumor. This is a good reason for having this dental surgery performed early in life.
