An x-ray machine is a vital element in a dental office. X-rays allow dentists, and other medical professionals, to diagnose a problem with accuracy. It also allows them to perform any necessary procedures with precision. The machines use radiation to take an x-ray picture, and while radiation tends to scare people, its use in the medical field is closely monitored for safety. Without x-rays a dentist wouldn't be able to find cavities, impacted teeth or safely perform root canals. It is also possible for a tooth pain to come from an opposite side of the mouth than where the problem is, due to crossing nerves, x-rays allow a dentist to act with certainty.
An x-ray machine allows a dentist to see inside the human anatomy. This means a dentist can see if the pulp of the tooth is infected or analyze and plan out the exact route for a root canal. Bitewing or periapical x-rays are the most often taken in the dental office. These require patients to bite down on a piece of plastic with x-ray film in the center. Occasionaly panoramic x-rays will be required, these allow the dentist to see your entire mouth in a single image. Dental x-rays expose the patient to very little radiation, about 2-3 millirem. According to the National Council on Radiation Protection the average U.S. citizen will receive around 360 millirem every year from background sources. Advances in digital technology have also given us the ability to take a digital x-ray.
A digital x-ray machine allows the x-ray picture to be taken with the use of around one-tenth less radiation than conventional x-rays. Digital x-rays also allows the dentist to see the x-ray instantly and allows for superior diagnosis because it can be enlarged so easily. The Atlanta Dental Group PC uses the Shick digital x-ray system primarily for root canals.
The use of an x-ray machine is a standard part of any dental examination, and there is no reason to be worried about the exposure to radiation, especially with the lead apron used during the taking of the x-ray. If you are pregnant or have other worries about getting an x-ray, tell your dentist beforehand.
