Xerostomia

xerostomia

The medical term for dry mouth is xerostomia. This is exactly what it sounds like, a lack of saliva in the mouth causing a dry mouth. While this may sound harmless enough it can actually cause a number of oral health problems as well as difficulties eating and speaking. Many people may experience problems with dry mouth but will not do anything about it until it has caused more serious oral health problems. If you are experiencing dry mouth or cotton mouth you should see a dentist.

Xerostomia can be caused by dehydration, alcohol, medications, or even trauma to the salivary glands. Dry mouth can also be caused by health conditions like diabetes, nasal and sinus infections, Sjögren's syndrome and Lambert-Eaton syndrome. Dry mouth can also be caused by drug use and is a significant symptom of meth use. While a lack of saliva may seem like a minor annoyance to most people this condition can wreak havoc with your oral health.

Xerostomia can cause problems with cavities and periodontal disease (gum disease) and even bad breath. Saliva contains antibacterials that kill harmful bacteria in the mouth. Without saliva the bacteria can run rampant and eat through the enamel of the gums or cause infections of the gums. Dry mouth treatment focuses on remedying whatever is causing the dry mouth while preventing cavities and gum disease. It is generally a good idea to use a special fluoride rinse until the condition is fully treated.
